Comeback Kustom Kulture (my Rat Fink)

barratatouille-Rat-FinkOn more time, I have an idea that goes through my head: what if I paid a tribute to RAT FINK? coool. Especially that it trotting me in my head for quite a while! Go go, I go as thoroughly as the Rat Fink on his bike;) I need a base, but which one? It comes to me an idea … I love Kid Paddle and of course the “blorks” that I collect with fiercely, which allowed me to constitute a small army of these lovely critters :)

So I will leave this base for my Fink Rat. A mix with Frankenstein of blork and RF … the result is going to be rock n ‘roll. Ok, I’m taking the base of the blork, I just graft it with ears, a muzzle, and a rat tail. For the rest, I keep the base legs of the figurine. For the arms, I take those of a Kidrobot Bub, to give it an urban side.

I also point out my little nod to Heidi Van Horne with this badge “I LOVE HEIDI” on the front of the figure (which I can customize to extreme) … I find the composition terrible and really funny! For the little history, I have a “blork” in my rearview mirror. Finally, if I have to put the figure of my RF on my rearview mirror, it will have to be light … so make it hollow ! For if it is full, it will explode my windscreen!

Here I am left to think to find the solution! It did not take me long to come to the conclusion of building a rotomoulding machine on my own! Ok, go for a tour, look for plans etc. I find a video tutorial that explains the process. Go hop, I buy the material to do it. A few weekends later, she is ready! The first attempts were more than chaotic. But after a few adjustments and adjustments, she delivered all her promises.

With this fucking machine, I realized the perfect figure the first time. Unbelievable; Not an air bubble, a perfectly clean result! Then, I added the arms, the legs and the tail (for these elements, I made a separate silicone mold for ease of assembly).

Again, I think I’ll have fun painting side especially in the outfit of MY RAT Fink :) Now you judge!

Azia (I love you Japan)

I go in another direction (to take a short break) Side of the country of the rising sun … Lovers of Japan always, I could not not realize a figurine style manga! Same procedure as for Maya realize a face then the “graft” on the body of Ginger! I take the typical codes of the manga to realize it. Hair on the side and two “balls” on the top of the head. Simple but super efficient.

Barratatouille-Azia_01

Again, I am pleased with the result. Same story, Head + Body + Arms … the recipe is good there again … But I want to go longer. I take “everything” that falls under my hand but as even with a guideline.

I want a warrior at the She Spawn (For the record, Spawn is a comic book of fiction about the eponymous character created by Todd McFarlane. It was launched by the publisher Image Comics in May 1992 in the United States … A comic that I adore … the figurines also for that matter).

I add elements like a shoulder pad + protections on the body, front and back as well as on the legs. A shield of the most beautiful effect on the left forearm (And a fully cybernetic arm for the right). Here Azia was born … but I dry for the color for the moment, it is white ready to take life. So if you have any painting ideas :)Barratatouille-Azia_03

Heidi Van Horne & Bettie Page (Maya part II)

A pin-up, I take the bet. Of course, he’s right, creating my own pin-up figurine would be ideal for me, if I want to touch through this world that fascinates me so much. I start again in the creation of a figurine. I have to find inspiration … but where? After some research, I take the reference in matters of pin-up: Bettie Page because I want to do a classic pin up at first. And not a pin up tattooed from head to toe as we see right now even though I like a model likebarratatouille-BETTIE-PAGE Sabina Kelley.

And then, I come across Heidi Van Horne via Facebook it seems … direct, I flash on … because it is exactly the pin-up that I was looking for. An American pin-up of very well-known beauty across the Atlantic and which has several magazine covers on kustom kulture. She has a lot in common with Bettie. I quickly realize a matrix from photos that I find on the net. I take care to make a haircut that will allow me to add additions to create different hairstyles! For the body of the figurine, I facilitate myself the task, it will be the body of Ginger. Like this, I resume the idea of customizing the dress!barratatouille-HEIDI-VAN-HORNE

And this allows me not to make a new mold of 8.5 pounds at the moment. The head is rather easy to make … I create the silicone mold in the stride … the result is positive! … Super, I can graft the head on the body of Ginger … Perfect everything rolls. I add the arms, more of the milliput for the hair and create a very 60’s cup … The trick is :) The code name will be Maya.

You can see the result with a nod to Heidi Van Horne who has camped the role of one of the characters of kustom kulture, a woman “devil” (Made famous by the artist that I adore enormously: Coop) With tail and devil horns at the AC / DC :) and another nod to a rock band that I love: Nashville Pussy with a reminder of one of their latest albums Up the Dosage or is represented A flash on a camouflage pattern. I realize once again a cardboard box with the same process and here is the result …

Korero la naissance de Maya (part I)

barratatouille-korero-press

I do not know what is taking me, one day I send an email to the publishing house Korero to show them my work. Yet with the little creation at my disposal, I know I will not go far. But I’m trying. You must confess a single page in one of their books with one of my creations, I will be in heaven.

The publisher contacts me after sending this mail. He likes my work. Several exchanges took place. But he is preparing a book on pin-ups and asks me if I realize. Like a ass hole, I tell him no :( It will not be this time.

The Bride of Frankenstein

barratatouille-Ginger-FrankensteinAkustom kulture obsessed me more and more, in addition to watching my books of the publishing house Korero which deals with the subject as well as several magazines like Kustom. I become “crazy” because I really want to invest in this universe. An idea passes my mind! Quite simply, turn Ginger into a Bride (not Chucky 😉 but Frankenstein. The famous American film of James Whale released in 1935 with the emblematic Boris Karloff in Frankenstein and the wonderful Elsa Lanchester in the role of the Bride.

I find the idea funny and I start … I make a new draw, I exchange the brown of Ginger’s skin for a green and a nice blue for eyelids but still a bright red for his lips and small freckles. Her dress becomes a white bandage which also covers a large part of her arms.

I am amused to make two scars, one at the level of the neck and the other on the left shoulder. For the base, I add to the base of the plaster to simulate an irregular and muddy earth of a cemetery (to reinforce this effect, I pull a tombstone I cut in a plastic model element of the mark Revell).

To give an air even more glowering, I decide to make an arm that comes out of the ground, which I retrieve from another model. The whole is treated in gray because I want the result to be still very graphic. The glossy side of the paint reinforces the muddy side. I purposely dirty his boots by throwing a little paint at the same time. A final retouch in his hair with his emblematic white wick on each side, and the trick is played. Again, I personalize the box, with the same procedure as the Ginger “Al Caine”. The result is really cool. I’m on track :)

Al Sugar Cayne (Ginger part II)

A day, I get a message from Al Sugar Cayne, a New York BMX champion (and who also carries a show in a car with guests to ask questions about their news) … New York, coooool!

He tells me he likes my Ginger figurine, coooool :) the contact goes well. Al Sugar hosts a blog on the BMX, Hip Hop, toy, fashion in New York plus his Bike Fest … he makes an article about Ginger on his blog. For the pleasure, I realize a small “Ginger” in his effigy. And then there comes to me an idea. I decide to go to the top speed, is to create my own figurine!

I start with my figure Ginger that I had already created (in small format). But I want to sublimate it, make it a true icon! I leave as usual the recovery equipment … part of the arms, one leg, a piece of polystyrene, all padded with Milliput, I embrace the same technique as the first time. I want it to be large and thin with a very graphic result … I opt for a size of 30 cm.

The result is up to my expectations. As, I want to achieve several, I engage in the manufacture of a silicone mold. On arrival, it will be between 8 and 9 kilos + a second mold for the arms. I buy a resin with two components, I make a first impression … the result is bluffing, I have THE figurine: MY creation …

An African-American bomb of all beauty. I hurry to paint … I choose precisely. My basic colors will be brown, black, white and a red lipstick (heart-shaped) and a slightly darker color to do red tasks under the eyes (this famous brand) because I find it terribly sexy. I add a pair of earrings that I choose from Drug Store. The top is that I can also customize his tee shirt. For Al, I make him the color of his Blog www.sugarcayne.com …

With an Ikea carton, I create the packaging of the box to configure it. With my good old A4 plotter, I cut the drawing I made from a picture taken of the figurine. I take a glossy black adhesive for the cut. The contrast with the carpet of the cardboard box gives a very good effect. I also have to create a signature and a small pictologo.

I do not know why, I choose a pig, maybe a nod to the music and songs of “Garçons Bouchers” a french punk group, I listened a lot and the black tee-shirt that I had with Many Hair Pig . I found in an old book Picto Corel, a pig with garlic that succeeded me right away. I just added a helmet to personalize it a bit, and the trick was played …

My first Dunny (et hot rod)

barratatouille-HOT-ROD-01

In full creation of figurines … the Hot Rod returns to my ears. In the 90’s, a friend of mine, Thierry, who wanted to make a tee-shirt after one of his works shows me his drawings of dingo on the Rod. But I do not hit right now.

Year 2000, madness takes me … the Kustom Kulture goes straight to the Heart. Big flashback. I decide to make a figure of a Hot Rod. I’ve never done Dunny of Kidrobot, it’s a chance. I take old models Revell and Heller that train, I buy some also.

The base is a Playmobil kart or I graft pieces of these models. The result is interesting but not enough to my taste. Finally this first test of Hot Rod will give me an idea for later … but most importantly: the fever of the Kustom Kulture will not leave me any more.

My first Super Hero (Batman)

barratatouille-BatmanFan of Comic book for a long time, I could not miss out on the achievement of a super hero! But which one? More to the universe of Marvel characters (like Silver Surfer, Galactus, Fantastic 4, Magneto and of course all Spiderman bad guys) than DC, I opt for a DC comics character.

It will be Batman … classic you will say and you are right. And yet, I prefer the bad guys, the realization of a Joker would have seemed more just. But I do not say my last word on it.

I really do not like things smooth. I need a Batman not very clean. This character has been realized several times in its modern version (black suit) with very beautiful achievements. Again, I speak from a Munny of Kidrobot.

I decide to make the 1966 Batman made famous in the guise of Adam West (purple and gray suit). But I said, not very clean. So my Batman will bite into the crate and after a memorable bake, he will vomit on it. I make fake dollars scattered ashore and would wink at Jack Daniels (in a bottle like old school adulterated alcohol) …

This old Bruce can not stand No. 7. And here’s another Batman.

Ginger “Black is beautiful” (part I)

barratatouille-Ginger-HermesI wanted to make more and more of them, ideas came to me faster and faster. Again, I appeal to the things that speak to me … that I love. This time, I wanted to represent New York. For me, this city does not only represent gigantism, excess, but a beautiful black woman with a 70s cut. For me, New York is Harlem, jazz, blues, gospel … and this woman.

Personally, the design of this figurine was very easy, I already had this image engraved in me. Through my readings, these films seen … I also wanted to give her this year 70 that I could amplify thanks to the dress she wears that I had seen in “The Brain” Film Gérard Oury with Jean Paul Belmondo, David Niven, Eli Wallach and of course Bourvil. For its design, I take the smaller of the Munny which measures 2.5 inch.

This is the first time I use this format to make a miniature. For the hair, I take a ball of polystyrene that I dig and I paint in black, I am amused to create white boots with IRO tube of electrician to give it a nice look With my cutting plotter, I create Stylized laces.

But I do not forget an essential accessory: big round earrings … I make a very light makeup over the eyes and I do not forget to do freckles to him again once on the Cheeks (I think these freckles will become my trademark as my characters are essentially feminine).

Now, the Hermès bags to make a little wink to Paris why? why not :). As usual, I put the figurine on a small wooden base that I cover with a white Canson paper. Once finished, I knew that the story of this figure will not stop there!

CHANG DA PUNK

barratatouille-ChangI had to find other ideas … very quickly, I turned to the skate world, through my friend Christophe with whom I was graffiti for many years and which for me is a true reference in this environment because Is simply his life. So I had fun making this little character: Chang.

As in all my achievements, I try to make a composition by adding one or more elements without overloading the scene, just a small element to balance the whole. In this case, no head cut;) but a simple bar attached to the base gray bitumen to make a good old Frontside lipslide …

I also wanted to give him a little punk side, a few pics of black color is enough to give him that look (with a work on the pants prince of galls that goes well and a little wink to the brand Vans that l ‘No longer presented in white letters on a black tee-shirt). As you can see, Chang is just standing on his skate more precisely a fingerboard for the novices, it is a miniature wooden or plastic skate (which is also customized with the creation date of Vans (1966) realized With my cutting plotter). With the retreat, I could also put a chain on the side of the pocket …

Like all my figurines, I will find one day a little an evolution (look, playset …) to be continued

PS: for the record, the Fingerboards were first made in the 1970s as keychains for skate enthusiasts. Subsequently, they were made in much better quality and with more resistant trays. People then realized that these small boards can be used to simulate the figures they would make on their skateboards.
